AAPM Presentation: Current Approach to Gonadal Shielding

Discontinuing Patient Gonadal Shielding: Why AAPM CARES

Even as contributors to the session, we all learned from the other presentations. Five speakers, totalling about 45 minutes, give a comprehensive study, summarizing very nicely and somewhat uniquely the motivations, challenges, and resources when discontinuing the routine use of gonadal shielding during radiography. We are sharing this session to give visibility to the AAPM CARES efforts and to further build bridges with patients and healthcare workers looking to learn more about the current status of gonadal shielding.

From the forward:

“While the scientific community has published information on radiation sources and effects, it has tended to be technical and perhaps difficult for the general public to understand—which has often confused, rather than informed, the public, meaning that the fear and confusion engendered decades ago prevails. This publication tackles the issue by detailing the most up-to-date scientific information from UNSCEAR — on the types of radiation, their sources and effects on humans and the environment—and making it accessible to the general reader.”
